I have been tossing up ideas for colouring for some time. This is my current idea. I like how the attention is drawn to the character instead of the background, even when it is present. This simplistic background style would allow a large focus on character emotion and movement, rather than background design.
I get where you are coming from for the separation but you need to tidy up the artwork a little just work everything up a notch. Be very careful to make sure that the character is in proportion.
